Conducting a Successful SIDS Training

Here are some guiding principles to remember:

  • Acknowledge individual expertise of participants.
  • Know your limitations. If a question/issue is presented which you are unable to address, find out the information and follow up by responding after the training.
  • Facilitate risk-taking. During the training have participants share challenging situations and personal experiences.
  • Support change.
  • Validate the needs of the participants.
These same principles apply to the interaction between SIDS Professionals and the family, and it is important for the trainer to model these principles throughout the training to reinforce these concepts.

Characteristics of the Effective Trainer

Trainers interested in conducting SIDS trainings need a breadth of knowledge and experience. While each training session may require different training techniques, the following elements reflect the basic skills and knowledge to be a successful trainer.

  • SIDS knowledge and experience.
  • Previous training experience.
  • Trainer adaptability.
  • Ability to model skills.
Classroom Environment

Participants will be more receptive to the information presented if the classroom allows them to feel comfortable and safe. Selecting a room with adequate seating and proper temperature control is essential. Participants will be more attentive is comfortable seating is provided. Most people prefer classroom-style seating with tables and chairs. Sometimes the room configuration and the number of participants may necessitate theater-style seating.

A room away from constant distractions will be more effective. Having people talking nearby, hearing a television, radio, or people walking past the room will be distracting. A room free of clutter will help minimize distractions.

Arrange the chairs so participants have sufficient work space and can hear the speakers without straining. Be sure to allow for adequate "personal space."

In addition, having refreshments available is always appreciated by participants.

Tips for Trainers

Here are a few tips, especially for new trainers:

  • Have participants share their experiences.
  • Encourage questions.
  • Consider various ways to present the materials using a combination of visual, oral, and written approaches.
  • Adjust the training materials to the needs of the participants.
  • Contact the California SIDS Program if you need technical assistance or support with training resources.
