Tips for Planning a Successful SIDS Training

  • Determine your target audience. Will you be training public health nurses, hospital nursery nurses, childcare providers, emergency personnel (fire, ambulance, and paramedics), teen parents, or the general public? The target audience determines which SIDS training curriculum you will use for the training.

  • Try to estimate the size of your audience as soon as possible. Schedule the SIDS training far enough ahead to allow time for you to gather materials, prepare participant handouts and familiarize yourself with SIDS information.

  • Decide how you will distribute information about the training. If you will be conducting in-house training - e.g. County DHHS, a hospital nursery, a high school teen parent class - your training flyer can be sent out by whatever communication route is used in that location. This could be email, a bulletin board, mail boxes and/or a classroom announcement. Refer to the Training Tools for a template of a flyer which you may adapt.

  • If you select materials which must be ordered from the National SIDS/Infant Death Resource Center or National Back to Sleep Campaign, be aware that it MAY take 2 or more months to receive your order. If you think that you will be providing SIDS trainings fairly often and you wish to use SIDS materials from either of these programs, you should plan to order larger quantities and keep them on hand.

  • Identify your audio-visual needs. Will you be using the PowerPoint Program? Will you show a video during your training? (If yes, will you need a video projector?). Make arrangements ahead of time to address your equipment needs. Don't forget a screen, extension cords and a power strip.

  • Assemble the training materials for your audience. You will probably want to use a pocket folder to hold the materials. Refer to the Training Resources for the presentation folder cover and title page for the training module. It is suggested that you prepare 5 to 10 more packets than you anticipate using.

  • If your agency uses a specific sign-in sheet, you can use that. You can also create one using the template in the Training Tools section.

  • You may wish to use your own agency's certificate, especially if continuing education units are being offered. If not, you can create a training certificate using the template in the Training Tools section.

  • Allow enough preparation time for your presentation. Familiarize yourself with SIDS information and statistics. Make sure you know what information is most important to present to your specific audience.

  • Every SIDS training should include the following information:

      The definition of SIDS
      SIDS risk factors
      SIDS and ethnic/racial disparities (statistics)
Reduce the risk of SIDS infant care practices
Research on SIDS and the most current theories
What happens when a baby dies of SIDS
Role of the coroner, the PHN, SIDS Parent Support groups
The importance of role modeling Back to Sleep and safe sleep practices (for nurses.)
  • Remember you should adapt your training to meet the specific needs of your audience.

  • The time frames on the sample agendas and the training course outlines are intended as guidelines and can be modified as appropriate. The suggested presentation topics, if included, will add completeness to your training. We do recognize that not every trainer will have the resources to include a coroner, a grief counselor, or even a parent panel. When you review the training course outlines, you will find audio-visual resources, such as video tapes, which can be substituted for speakers or guest presenters. You can also explore obtaining expert speakers for the various agenda topics from your own Coroner's office, local SIDS parent support group, and/or bereavement support organizations.

  • Contact the California SIDS Program at 800-369-SIDS (7437) if you need assistance in planning a SIDS training. Professional staff can also offer suggestions on resources, possible speakers, appropriate materials, and provide technical assistance.
