Training Materials

The following materials are used to teach professionals and others about SIDS. Resources cover a wide range of areas including risk reduction, the death scene investigation, SIDS facts, the grieving process, and how to compassionately interact with those affected by a sudden unexpected infant loss. Your local SIDS Coordinator may have a supply of these resources in their original format. Selected materials may also be available through the California SIDS Program. A Guidebook for Facilitators of SIDS Support Groups is a 150-page training binder for trained peer contacts. Among other topics, it covers Grief and Bereavement, Communication Skills, Suicide Intervention, and Public Relations. Only those completing the SIDS Support Group Facilitator training course receive this binder. Not available outside of California. English.

A Handbook for Peer Contacts of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome is a 145-page training binder for SIDS parents, family members, and others who have experienced a SIDS death. Among other topics, it covers the nature of Peer Contact Volunteering, and Peer Contact Policies and Procedures. Only those completing the Peer Contact training course receive this binder. Not available outside of California. English.

A Practical Guide to the SIDS Home Visit Binder is a 120-page three-ring binder for public health nurses, which provides detailed information about SIDS, planning and conducting a home visit, and reporting bereavement support services. It includes the Standards for Public Health Nurses booklet, the Annual SIDS Resource Listing, and the SIDS Informational Portfolio Order Form. English.

How to Lower the Risk of SIDS in the African American Community Curriculum is an educational tool for groups in the African American community learning about SIDS. It includes a flip chart, leader's guide, How to Lower the Risk of SIDS brochures, and magnets. English.

Reducing the Risk of SIDS: A Community Outreach Curriculum is an educational tool for groups learning about SIDS. It includes a flip chart, leader's guide, Taking Care of Your Baby handout, Back to Sleep video, Reduce the Risk of SIDS brochures, and Back to Sleep doorknob hangers. English and Spanish.

SIDS Training Guide for Training of Emergency Personnel Binder is a three-ring, three-inch binder filled with training materials for emergency personnel trainers, including fire, emergency medical technicians, paramedics, and law enforcement. This item is intended only for first responders who have completed their own training and are now providing SIDS training to others. English.

It covers current SIDS research and implications for infant care. It is designed for large screens and video projectors. English.

Bedsharing and the Risk for SIDS with Dr. Thomas G. Keens, M.D. Video is a 55-minute videotape for public health nurses summarizing the current research on bedsharing and its relationship to SIDS. A thumbnail picture outline is included with each video. English.

Reaching Out: SIDS and the Emergency Department Staff Video is a 30-minute videotape for emergency department staff. It includes SIDS facts and risk factors, discussing the SIDS death with parents in the hospital environment, and providing support to parents and caregivers. English.
